My sister Karen has asked me to write an ‘Idiot’s Guide’ for what we do/eat on a daily basis, so here it is…
Can I just say that I realise we’re all different, and everyone needs to check out with their own bodies whether something that we are doing is good for them too. I am not a doctor, I am however training in Nutrition after going through the last 6 months with Emma. I have learnt a lot, and if what we’re doing can help you too, that’s a gift in itself!
So, if you’ve read my blog on our morning metabolism booster you will have the recipe for our morning brew.
If you want to keep a track of how you’re getting on I would suggest peeing on a pH strip on a weekly basis, and check that your acid/alkaline balance is kept close to 7.3/7.4 for optimum well-being.
Whilst the lemon, ginger and green tea is brewing I prepare a morning smoothie:
- sieve kefir grains and use the yoghurt milk that’s left as a basis for smoothie (mine is made in a 1/2 litre kilner jar with a muslin cover – thoroughly wash the jar and place the kefir grains back into the jar. Top up with 1/2 litre of organic full fat milk (of your choice), and leave at room temperature overnight). Cover with muslin. Pour the yoghurt milk into your smoothie container.
- next I slice a banana and a few strawberries and put them into the container (the seeds in the strawberries attract any heavy metals in your body and eliminate them from your body as they make their way through)
- add 3 dessert spoons of frozen berries (something good gets concentrated when berries are frozen, if you find the info before me please let me know and I will add it here). My memory isn’t the best!
- add 1 teaspoon of turmeric paste (home-made and in the fridge)
- add 1 teaspoon of bentonite clay (home-made paste, kept in the fridge)
- add 1 teaspoon of super-green powder (of your choice)
- add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- add 1 teaspoon of local organic honey
- add 1 teaspoon of bee pollen (awesome for hair re-growth if you’ve lost it through chemo)
- add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (regulates your weight – say no more!)
- add a little almond milk, or milk of your choice – just enough to allow the mix to be smooth enough to drink
At this point we also have a small glass of Komboucha (home-made and in the fridge!)
This is an awesome breakfast for us, and it keeps us going until lunch time… we have lots of energy!!!
I would just like to repeat that I am not prescribing a recipe for anyone, I’m simply showing you what we do, and what works for us – there’s a reason for each of the ingredients in our smoothies. You may prefer other ingredients, have fun and explore the awesome variety that nature provides for us!
Next we make the carrot juice.
- We top, tail and scrub 2 kilos of organic carrots and chop them into juicer size pieces
- top, tail and scrub an organic beetroot
- chop about an inch of fresh ginger from a root
- quarter a small lime, with the peel
Depending on what else we have, we might add a pineapple, grapefruit or melon – there is so much to choose from!!!
Juice and pour into a bottle, drink 1/3 with your breakfast, 1/3 with your lunch and the last 1/3 with your dinner
For Lunch we usually have a plate heaped with salad, and maybe some new baby potatoes steamed
For Dinner, it depends whether we’re very hungry or not, generally we will swap between fish or nut cutlets. or my home-made ‘pulp veggie burgers’ with more salad or steamed veg.
There is so much pulp when you are juicing that I’ve been making pulp-burgers. They’re always different and yummy!!!
Throughout the day we drink lots of filtered water and herb teas. Emma loves peppermint and liquorice, my favourite at the moment is yerba matte, which gives me energy.
And that’s literally a day in our lives.
We walk a lot now Emma has more energy, she’s like Zebedee!! I can’t keep up with her…
And, last but not least – we have 30ml of Essiac Tea (brewed and in the fridge) with 60 ml of hot water and drink it before we go to bed.
